Summary
Disc 1 (ca. 37 min.). Jayne Ward Murray discusses performing in the Broadway revival of The Merry Widow in 1943; being selected by George Balanchine; being partnered with Frank [Francisco] Moncion; dancing a brief introduction waltz during the overture in the dark behind a scrim; Balanchine and director Felix Brentano working together; Balanchine appearing briefly during rehearsals; the Union moving the dancers dressing rooms from the 4th floor to just off stage; George Dorris playing the music for all of the dance sections while Jayne Ward Murray demonstrates and recalls the movements and patterns of the dances including the Men singing about the women song, the Gold and silver waltz, and the Can-can; Murray also talks about sitting on Melville Cooper's lap during the Can-can and describes the costumes. Disc 2 (3 min.) begins abruptly with discussion of where the dancers entered during the finale; briefly discuss movement possibilities; George Dorris tells story about Marta Eggerth asking Balanchine for help with her dancing; talk of show running for about a year and the subsequent tour of the West coast.
