Summary

1. Panel 1: John Meehan discusses meeting Alexei Ratmansky in Kiev and asking him to dance with Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Ratmansky talks about why he started dancing and joining the Bolshoi School at the age of 10, steps taken to get into Peter Pestov's class at the Bolshoi School, how the students from the school are picked to be in the Bolshoi company, dancing at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet for six years, the Iron Curtain coming down around 1986-1987 and being exposed to dancers and choreographers from outside Russia including Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov, some video excerpts of Ratmansky dancing, how he started to choreography after leaving Copenhagen and returning to Kiev, winning a prize in Kiev and preparing a full evening of work, dancing in the Royal Danish Ballet, creating triple bill at Kirov, being commissioned to create Nutcracker in Russia, being fired and then creating Nutcracker in Copenhagen. Panel 2: How Bright stream came about, Dmitri Shostakovich and Fedor Lopukhov working together closely to create the original production, being asked to direct the Bolshoi Ballet at the age of 34, being the director of the Bolshoi Ballet with 220 dancers and 20 coaches, how he felt over the years regarding the Russian technique and various other western styles, the overwhelming amount of work as director, what it was like directing his peers, the repertory he brought to the company, leaving the Bolshoi after five years so he had more time to choreography, coming to New York City and being asked by ABT to be their resident choreographer, seeing ABT for the first time in Paris, and his version of the Nutcracker and working with the children from the school. Panel 3: David Hallberg and Nancy Raffa both being at ABT when Ratmansky came to the company, the experience and feelings of first working with him, Ratmansky's first work for ABT being On the Dnieper, Hallberg dancing in four of Ratmansky's dances, working with Ratmansky as a choreographer, Raffa working with him as a ballet mistress, Hallberg talks about Ratmansky perfecting each of his dances until the last minute, the process of creating the new Shostakovich piece. Panel 4: Ratmansky discusses how he is a perfectionist, how choreographic ideas change when they don't work in the studio, talks about the new Shostakovich piece, Shostakovich's situation at the time the music was created and how he expected to be arrested and killed at any time, and how this piece will eventually become a triple bill.
