- Description
- 61 items (.2 cubic ft., one box); 21 x 26 cm and smaller.
- Summary
- Collection depicts aspects of the career of South African writer, educator and anti-apartheid activist Dennis Brutus, between 1980-1987 when he lived and taught in the United States. Neither Brutus's personal life or his professional activities before 1980 and after 1990 are depicted. The collection consists of studio portraits and candid shots of Brutus; group portraits showing Brutus with professional colleagues and acquaintances; and views of Brutus at public gatherings, lectures and attending a tribute dinner. A major portion of the collection consists of views of guests and speakers attending a tribute dinner for British Guiana-born writer, educator and Northwestern University professor Jan Carew, held at the Midland Hotel, Chicago, Illinois (1985). Also depicted are views of a trip by Brutus to Managua, Nicaragua (1987), where he took part in a lecture session at the University of Central America; and a group of snapshots, possibly taken by Brutus, depicting wooded areas around Swarthmore, Pennsylvania (ca. 1985).

- Biography (note)
- Dennis Brutus, 1924-2009, was a South African poet and human rights activist who, during the 1960s, successfully campaigned to have apartheid-era South Africa banned from international sports competition, notably the Olympic Games, from 1964 to 1991. After being imprisoned and banned from political and academic activities in South Africa, Brutus went into exile in the United Kingdom in 1966. He subsequently moved to the United States in 1970, and was eventually granted political asylum in 1983 after a protracted legal battle, where he later established himself as a writer, educator and anti-apartheid activist. In 1990, Brutus returned to post-apartheid South African to resume his academic, literary and political activities. He died in Cape Town in 2009.
