- Lee Edward Stern, host, on the radio program Speaking of dance, introduces his guest Alvin Ailey and his company Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; Ailey speaks with Stern about his company including its description as a repertory company; the company's financial situation; his work Revelations; how he characterizes his choreography; his early dance training with Lester Horton; choreographing his first dances, for the Lester Horton Dance Theater; performing these dances at Jacob's Pillow with Carmen De Lavallade and Joyce Trisler including Ted Shawn's response to them; performing Lester Horton's works with Carmen De Lavallade and the Lester Horton Dancers in New York; the circumstances of Ailey's and De Lavallade's joining the cast of the musical comedy House of flowers; performing with his own company (then called Alvin Ailey and Company), in New York and in Southeast Asia (called for that tour the De Lavallade Ailey American Dance Company) under the auspices of the United States Department of State; the annual disbanding and regrouping of the company after each long tour; the Russian tour and subsequent successes in the United States; the company's current season at City Center [New York City Center of Music and Drama]; Judith Jamison, including in Ailey's work Cry.
