- Summary
- In this oral history interview, Samuel Allen recounts his life as a poet and his early career as a lawyer. He begins the interview with the basic background of his life and family and his early interest in poetry. Despite his early interest in literature, he pursued the study of law as a practical endeavor, but eventually devoted all his energies to his poetry. He attended Fisk University for his undergraduate degree where he studied Sociology and then went on to study law at Harvard.

- Born in Columbus, Ohio, Samuel Allen (also known as Paul Vesey) studied creative writing under James Weldon Johnson at Fisk where he graduated magna cum laude in 1938. He received his JD from Harvard in 1941. Until 1968 when he formally left law for literature, he was active in both fields. Allen's poems were first published by Richard Wright in the journal, "Présence Africaine," and his poetry is today found in many anthologies.
