Summary
  1. The oral history with Charles Davis begins with his birth in Goodman, Mississippi. At the age of three, his family relocated to Chicago. He recounts his early musical influences in Chicago and summers back in Mississippi. His first musical influence was Charlie Parker. His formal musical education began at DuSable High School on the South Side of Chicago. Began his professional career in clubs on the South Side. Recounts his association with Billie Holiday while playing with Ben Webster. In 1957 began playing and traveling with Dinah Washington. Met comedian Red Foxx during this time. Discusses the relationship between the Blue and Jazz. After playing in New York he relocated permanently to New York City in 1959. In New York he played with Kenny Dorham, with whom he associated musically for many years.
