1. Jems Koko Bi (geb. 1966 in Sinfra, Côte d'Ivoire; lebt und arbeitet in Kaarst, Dakar und Abidjan) ist weltweit bekannt für seine mit der Motorsäge geschaffenen, monumentalen Skulpturen aus Holz. Seine neueste Werkgruppe wird in diesem Buch den großformatigen Holzschnitten von HAP Grieshaber (geb. 1909 in Rot an der Rot; gest. 1981 in Eningen unter Achalm) gegenübergestellt. Obwohl die beiden Künstler sich nie begegnet sind, zeichnet sich ihr Werk durch ähnliche Themen, Werte und Materialität aus. Im Mittelpunkt steht das Schicksal des Waldes und seine politische wie gesellschaftliche Tragweite: Grieshabers Holzschnitte sind Ausdruck des Widerstands gegen den Raubbau an der Natur in den 1970er-Jahren - heute angesichts der Klimakrise und der Fridays-for-Future-Bewegung aktueller denn je. Die Figurengruppen Koko Bis stehen in der Tradition dieser politischen Kunst, wobei seine Arbeiten ein globales, universelles Plädoyer für einen nachhaltigen Umgang mit unseren Ressourcen sind. Jems Koko Bi studierte am Institut National Supérieur des Arts et de l'Action Culturelle (INSAAC) in Abidjan und an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Seine Werke wurden unter anderem im Centre Pompidou in Paris, auf der documenta 13, der Havana Biennial sowie mehrfach auf der Biennale di Venezia und Biennale de Dakar ausgestellt. 2019 gründete er die Waldbiennale Abidjan Green Arts. HAP Grieshaber studierte Gebrauchsgrafik an der Staatlichen Kunstgewerbeschule in Stuttgart. Sein Werk gilt als wichtiger Beitrag zur Erneuerung des Mediums Holzschnitt im 20. Jahrhunderts Er war Teilnehmer der documenta I, II und III, Professor an der Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe und wurde mit zahlreichen Preisen und Retrospektiven gewürdigt. 2. The Political Substance of Wood. Jems Koko Bi (b. Sinfra, Côte d'Ivoire, 1966; lives and works in Kaarst, Germany, Dakar, and Abidjan) is world-renowned for the monumental wood sculptures he creates using a machine saw. This book juxtaposes his most recent body of works with the large-format woodcuts of HAP Grieshaber (b. Rot an der Rot, Germany, 1909; d. Eningen unter Achalm, 1981). Although the two artists never met, their oeuvres are characterized by similar themes, values, and materials. The central concern is the fate of the forests and its momentous political and social implications: Grieshaber's woodcuts articulate his principled opposition to the predatory exploitation of nature in the 1970s--an issue that is more relevant than ever today in light of the climate crisis and the Fridays for Future movement. Koko Bi's figural groups bring this tradition of political art into our time, making a global and universally compelling case for a sustainable husbandry of our resources. Jems Koko Bi studied at the Institut National Supérieur des Arts et de l'Action Culturelle (INSAAC), Abidjan, and the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts.
