Summary
  1. Collection documents aspects of the professional and personal life of writer Jewelle Gomez from the 1980s to 2000. The collection consists of individual portraits of Gomez, mostly candid; group portraits showing Gomez with family, partners, friends and colleagues; individual and group portraits of partners, family and friends; and views of gatherings, events, book tours and travel. Depictions of Gomez's personal life before the 1980s is very limited.
  2. Of note are candid shots and views of Gomez during a book tour in Europe (1992); with cast members and at events related to the national tour of the stage production "Bones & Ash: A Gilda Story," her theatrical adaptation of her 1991 novel "The Gilda Stories" (1996); accepting an award at the National Center for Lesbian Rights (1998); and attending the Black Queers in the Academy/Queer Studies, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2000). Also depicted are her partner Diane Sabin and former partner Marty Pottenger, and candid shots of Gomez with relatives. Also of note is a publicity photo for Howard Simon's play "James Baldwin: A Soul on Fire" featuring Forrest McClendon and Charles Reese (1999).

Biography (note)
  1. Jewelle Gomez, born in 1948, is an activist and award-winning author. Her novel, The Gilda Stories (1991), received the Lambda award for both fiction and science fiction. She has published essay collections including Forty-Three Septembers (1993), a short-story collection called Don't Explain (1997), three poetry collections, and a stage adaptation of The Gilda Stories, which was widely performed by the Urban Bush Women company. Her writings have been anthologized and published in periodicals including The New York Times, Ms. Magazine, Black Scholar and the Oxford World Treasury of Love Stories. She has served on the founding boards of various organizations, including the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). She was raised in New England and New York City and currently lives on the West Coast, where she is director of Grants and Community Initiatives for Horizon, and president of the San Francisco Library Commission.
