  1. 31 items (two folders); 26 x 21 cm.
Summary
  1. Collection consists of contact sheets depicting the cast and crew of the motion picture "Losing Ground" in 1982; and individual and group portraits of the relatives of Kathleen Collins's mother Mildred Conwell (née Jones), as well as Jones herself, ca. 1863-2003. Depictions of Collins's personal life and other professional activities are not included.
  2. The contact sheets from "Losing Ground" depict director/writer Collins, cinematographer Ronald K. Gray, and cast members Seret Scott, Bill Gunn, Maritza Rivera and Norberto Kerner. Some views of location shots, mannequins, and an unidentified child are also included. The personal photographs, many of which are photographic reproductions of vintage prints, depict the descendants and relatives of Jeremiah and Hannah Pierce, Collins's maternal great-grandparents, mainly from the 1860s to the late 1940s, including Mildred Jones as a small child to young adulthood. Also included are portraits of descendants from the late 1990s to 2000s.

  1. Kathleen Collins, 1942-1988, was an African-American writer, filmmaker, civil rights activist, and educator. Her two feature films, "The Cruz Brothers and Miss Malloy" (1980) and "Losing Ground" (1982), would influence the range of films created by Black women. Collins wrote many plays and screenplays, notably the plays "In the Midnight Hour" (1981) and "The Brothers" (1982). Her short story "Interiors," a fictionalized account of her divorce, was posthumously published in 2015, as was a collection of short stories entitled "Whatever Happened to Interracial Love?" (2016).
