  1. Octavia E. Butler, 1947-2006, was an African American science fiction author who was a multiple recipient of both the Hugo and Nebula awards, and the first science-fiction writer to receive a MacArthur Fellowship (1995). Among her best known works are the short story "Bloodchild" (1984); the novels "Kindred" (1979) and "Fledgling" (2005); and three separate groups of novels called the Patternist series (1976-1984), the Xenogenesis trilogy (1987-1989) and the Parable series (1993-1998).
