Summary
  1. Portfolio consists of individual portraits and candid shots of persons identified as artists of African descent during the 1980s, representing mostly visual art, writing, music and photography. Among those depicted include artists Richard Barclift, Camille Billops, Elton C. Fax, and Tom Feelings; musicians Willie Colon, Dizzy Gillespie, Julius Hemphil and Milt Jackson; singers Roberta Flack, Richie Havens and Aminata Moseka (Abbey Lincoln); photographers Constantino Arias, James Connors and Adger Cowans; and writers Louis Reyes Rivera, Ntozake Shange, Quincy Troupe and Ted Wilson. Also depicted are dancer/teacher LaRocque Bey; lawyer and educator Heywood Burns; Afro American events producer Cujoe; and Nation of Islam minister Louis Farrakhan.

Biography (note)
  1. Shawn Walker, born 1940 and raised in Harlem, New York, is a fine art and documentary photographer, and teacher. In the early 1960s, Walker was a founding member of the Black photgraphers' group, the Kamoinge Workshop, in which he photographed the streets of New York and has been exhibited in shows organized by the group ever since. He has also lived or traveled in Cuba, Guyana, Mexico, Nigeria and Senegal since the 1970s. Walker has taught photography for over 40 years, mainly in the New York area and San Francisco, and has had work published in various publicatons, including Essence and National Alliance.
