Summary

1. An in-depth review around the main themes and ideas related to the Surrealist movement, as well as an unprecedented dialogue between European surrealism and its Mexican side. The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has mainly collected European masterpieces from the first phase of Surrealism. Many of these pieces come from the Edward James collection and others have been acquired over the years. The rest of the works in the exhibition were created in Mexico and come from different Mexican collections. An important community of surrealist women was found in this country that nurtured their interest in the study of archaeology, anthropology and various aspects of occultism. Theer creations, which convey a vision that integrates feminism, ecology and magic, add new dimensions to the surrealist universe, while addressing the fundamental role that Mexico had during the second phase of surrealism.
