Summary
  1. The annual Joseph Maharam Foundation Awards for Theater Design are presented to the winners for the 1979-80 season. Mr. Maharam delivers a brief speech, and is followed by lighting specialist Edward Kook, who shares his views on lighting design in the theater. Maharam awards are presented by Kook, actors Glenn Close and Maureen O'Sullivan, and critic Mel Gussow.
  2. Following the presentation of the Maharam awards, winners discuss their work. Julie Taymor demonstrates the puppets she created for Elizabath Swados' The Haggadah; David Mitchell describes the challenge of designing sets for the large-scale Broadway musical Barnum; Stuart Wurtzel talks about his sets for Peter Parnell's The sorrows of Stephen; costume designer Linda Fisher recounts her experiences on the revival of Morning's at seven, and Dennis Parichy discusses the challenges of lighting the drama Talley's folly. Mid-show, they are joined by two more designers, Wolfgang Roth and Joseph Kosuth, who describe their recent projects. Panelists also take questions from members of the audience.
