Summary
  1. Archeologists have determined that the Novocherkassk hoard accompanied the burial of a high-ranking Sarmatian woman in the first century A.D. The absence of arms, armor, and horse gear indicate that the barrow was the burial site of a woman, as do abundant pieces of gold jewelry, including bracelets and torque. The rank of the woman was probably chief priestess and tribal ruler, as the hoard contains a crown. Some pieces consist of gems and colored glass imbedded in gold revealing an indigenous Sarmatian polychrome style. Other objects of silver and brass were imported from countries around the Mediterranean, and among the pieces of jewelry are several examples of Hellenic style. Zoomorphic shapes predominate, and forms of elk, deer, and perhaps camel as well as tiger, wolf, gryphon, and birds of prey recur. As an archeological find the works are a rich source of knowledge about the southern steppe culture, and as works of art they show high craftsmanship and aesthetic standards with some influence from the East, but many questions are still open. -- Summary written by John W. Emerich, Bronze Horseman Literary Agency.
