1. "This book, and its corresponding exhibition in the Historical Museum of The Hague, takes a close look at two women who contributed enormously to court culture and the arts in The Hague. Elizabeth Stuart (1596-1662) and Amalia von Solms (1602-1675) arrived in the Republic of the United Netherlands in 1621 with Frederick V, the banished Elector Palatine and King of Bohemia. Elizabeth, daughter of James VI of Scotland and I of England, was Frederick's wife and thus Queen of Bohemia, and Amalia Elizabeth's lady-in-waiting. What ought to have been a short stay turned into an exile of dozens of years. Just four years after following Elizabeth Stuart to The Hague, Amalia married the Republic's new Stadholder, Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange. The marriage brought with it the title of princess, and with this change of status Elizabeth's former lady-in-waiting turned into her courtly rival"--Page iv.
