Summary
  1. Since the 1950's, when the Inuit began to settle in permanent communities, the sculpture of Nunavik has earned renown throughout the world. One of the most striking themes in this art is the figure of the Inuit woman, especially when portrayed as a mother, busy at some traditional domestic task. Guardians of Memory explores this cultural expression, seeking links between the sculpted figure and the Inuit woman's identity, appearance and activities, as well as examining sculpture inspired by legend, myth and the imaginary world. The evolving story of these sculpted women reveals not only the great diversity of subjects, themes and shapes to be found in such work, but also he fertile imagination of the men and women who carve in the villages of Inukjuak, Ivujivik, Kuujjuaraapik, Povungnituk and Salluit. This sculpture, rooted in a people's lifestyle, takes on deeper meaning as the links between humanity and the sculpted stone emerge.
