- Summary
- A study based on interviews with 37 immigrants (both men and women), born between 1894-1921, and archival material. Discusses the life of Jewish women in Germany before the war (1900-1933), relating to feelings of security as well as antisemitism, the role of Jewish women as pioneers in the universities and the professions, and the changes which took place with the rise of the Nazi regime, which interrupted the fight for women's rights in the economic and social spheres. Jewish women were then forced to concentrate on raising their families and, at the same time, to work in family enterprises and in Jewish welfare organizations. The fact that there was no longer a place for Jewish women as academics evoked ruptures in life planning and questions of identity, and led to an increase in emigration, which intensified after the "Kristallnacht" pogrom.
