Summary
  1. This novel recounts the rebellion in 1839 of 53 African slaves aboard the Amistad, a Spanish slave ship from Cuba. After the ship was intercepted by the U.S. Navy and taken to New London, Connecticut, President Van Buren and the pro-slavery government wanted to return the slaves to Havana, but the fledgling abolitionist movement forced a series of trials, culminating at the Supreme Court, in which the slaves were defended by former President John Quincy Adams.
