Summary
  1. A collection of documents dated between June 1940-January 1945, written by SS officers in Auschwitz who numbered ca. 7,000 employees, among them 200 women, during the period covered. The documents demonstrate the course of the daily life of the SS, ruled by orders and commands which seem to be insignificant at first sight, but point to the bureaucratic organization of the murder of the Jews, and thus to the systematic policy of annihilation. The introduction (xii pp.) emphasizes the extent of exploitation of the prisoners' property which was much more important in Auschwitz than in other camps; the belongings were stockpiled, assorted, and stored in 29 barracks. Notes that while the instructions of Rudolf Höss to his subordinates (regarding their own personal lives) were characterized by harshness and cruelty, they were often not fully implemented. The orders rarely refer directly to the Final Solution, but between the lines one can find revealing information on its process.
