Summary
  1. Although one cannot say that the Spanish government under Franco supported the murderous intentions of Nazi Germany, it also cannot be said that Spain granted asylum to the persecuted Jews. Antisemitic attitudes, rooted in traditional Catholicism, were prevalent in Spain. So long as Jews with Spanish citizenship who lived under Nazi occupation were only persecuted, but were not in danger of losing their lives, the Spanish government did not intervene. Only when Germany ordered their repatriation in 1943 and threatened that otherwise they would deport them, was Spain forced to act. Then, Jews were allowed to enter Spain only in transit to another country; they were helped by Jewish aid organizations. Draconic rules for inspection of citizenship were applied in order to assuage anti-Jewish elements in the Spanish government. As it was difficult to find countries willing to accept Jews, many remained without protection, especially in France. Altogether, ca. 20,000-35,000 Jews crossed the Spanish border legally or illegally. In France, Spain recognized 500 as Spanish citizens; 2,000 remained without refuge. In Greece, out of 700 Spanish Jews, 367 were repatriated. Altogether, Spain's rescue actions were limited, contrary to its claims after 1945.
