Summary
  1. "In recent years, many Americans have claimed to have multiple personalities or recovered memories, or to have been abused by satanists or extraterrestrials. At the same time, disorders like chronic fatigue syndrome and "total allergy syndrome" have been on the increase. This book places these claims and supposed disorders in the framework of "culture bound syndromes," both Western and non-Western, and shows how they reflect the essentially social and even theatrical nature of human thought and action. These claims and disorders illustrate, in the clearest possible form, aspects of human nature discovered by social psychologists, but not yet widely understood by those outside the field.
  2. By considering these claims and disorders in detail, this book introduces readers to a new view of thought and consciousness that will change the way readers see themselves and others."--Jacket.
