- Summary
- Each volume deals with a particular town or towns: Modena, Venezia, Torino and Genova, Milano and Firenze. Special chapters in each volume deal with the attitude of the Inquisition towards Jews and Conversos during the 16th-17th centuries. Discusses the role of the Inquisition in establishing ghettos and introducing special regulations for the Jews (i.e. the yellow badge) and in stamping out Judaizing among Conversos, mostly Spanish and Portuguese. Mentions cases of opportunistic baptism for material benefit (in Venezia) or forced baptism of Jewish children (in Torino). Describes trials of Judaizers in the 16th century (e.g. that of Gaspar Ribeiro [=Ribiera] in Venezia in 1580). Mentions other forms of persecution (especially the prohibition on and burning of the Talmud in the Duchy of Milano), and restrictions on relations between Jews and Christians.
- Describes Inquisitorial activities and persecution directed against Protestants, atheists, Judaizers, and Islamizers in the Kingdom of Naples and in Bologna. Pp. 41-52, "Ebraizzanti ed islamizzanti", refer to the expulsion of the Jews from Naples in 1510 and 1515, with the exception of a few hundred rich Jews kept for economic reasons. In 1521 the yellow badge was imposed, in 1533 the Jews were subject to forced conversion, and they were expelled again in 1541. The few remaining Conversos were brought to trial by the Inquisition after 1569. Includes a description of the Inquisitorial procedure.
