Summary

1. Modernism painter and sculptor Athos Bulcao (b. Rio de Janeiro 1918 -2008) was a disciple of Candido Portinari with whom he worked in the creation of the mural "So Francisco de Assis" at the Pampulha Church, in Belo Horizonte. The present book "sought to gather together the greatest possible number of works integrating art into architecture, as well as paintings, drawings and output in other supports. We also present new articles and an anthology of texts by professionals connected to art, education, architecture and Brazilian culture" --Page 12. Bulcao began painting in 1940 and soon developed a visual code of his own in a series that would reach its apex in the 1980's. During the next decade, his paintings transformed into abstract-geometric, decomposing into chromatic subtleties, small circles and light in unprecedented optical effects.
