Summary
  1. This is a volume in the European Studies in Social Psychology series. In taking a European perspective, the series has often diverged from North American, "mainstream" psychology. A major part of this emphasis has been the social psychology of language use. This volume is therefore of interest both to psycholinguists and to social psychologists. Despite considerable attempts to describe contextual variation in speech, basic social psychological principles have received scant attention in language research. Similarly, American social psychology has largely disregarded the role of language in social interaction. Thus, any attempt to bridge these complimentary areas of study is welcome. The book offers six chapters, of varying intents and formats, and is an informative, well-written volume. Recommended both to the social psychologist interested in language, and the psycholinguist interested in diverse approaches to "situated" language use.
