Baptism, South Carolina
Doris Ulmann’s photojournalistic work documented the lives of rural people of the American South. From 1929 to 1933 she made photographs of African American plantation workers who were members of the Gullah people of South Carolina. She took many images at the Lang Syne Plantation near Fort Motte, South Carolina, including portraits of men, women, and children, as well as views of agricultural work, daily activities, religious services, and socializing. Plantation owner William Peterkin was the husband of author Julia Peterkin, whose Roll, Jordan, Roll featured Ulmann’s photographs.
