The Snowy Day
With more than 485,000 total checkouts, the most frequently borrowed book in the history of The New York Public Library is a picture book classic: The Snowy Day (1962), written and illustrated by Ezra Jack Keats. This recently retired copy from the Throg’s Neck Library in the Bronx was borrowed more than 100 times in 13 years—more times than any other copy currently in circulation in the Library’s system.
When The Snowy Day debuted during the civil rights era, few storybook characters looked like its protagonist, a Black boy named Peter. Today the book is praised as much for being a breakthrough in representation as it is for its charming collage illustrations and the universal appeal of its beautifully simple story.
