Animales en peligro de extinción
Cartonera, or books with bindings made from discarded cardboard (cartón), emerged from Latin American creative reuse culture in the early 2000s. Named after the cartoneros of Argentina who make their living by collecting recyclables, these collaboratively crafted works invite us to reconsider what we deem disposable. The covers of cartoneras are typically hand-painted and decorated, making each copy a unique work of art. Today, an international movement surrounding cartonera creation proposes more equitable alternatives to mass-market publishing. These cartonera children’s books from Peru are accessible for readers who are blind or low vision, featuring Braille as well as visual text. They have tactile illustrations with varying textures and address subjects such as Peruvian Animals in Danger of Extinction, Afro-Peruvian Culture, and Medicinal Plants from Peru.
