Passover seder service: Deutsches Theatre Restaurant

Produced by Holocaust survivors in the Displaced Persons camps around Munich and used at the first Passover after the defeat of Nazi Germany (April 15–16, 1946), this text is known as the Survivors’ Haggadah. Y.D. Sheynzon created the text and border drawings, which reflect the experience of the Holocaust interwoven with traditional elements of the Haggadah. Sheynzon incorporated seven woodcuts from the portfolio of another survivor, the Hungarian artist Miklós Adler. The text page is written in Yiddish, the vernacular of many of the Jews killed in the Holocaust, and the border surrounding it shows (from right to left) those subjugated under Hitler, who then labor around the border of the page toward the building of a new homeland. The caption under the woodcut is from the traditional Haggadah text: “It was not just one alone who has risen up to destroy us.”
