Unveiling Visions ’ core curatorial approach draws inspiration from artist and filmmaker John Akomfrah’s concept of the “Data Thief,” a fictional timetravelling archaeologist who is charged with piecing together black creative history. The curators’ critical interpretation of this avatar through the lens of black speculative cultural production reveals that the thread that joins the objects on view—both real and imagined— is in fact the commitment to storytelling. The exhibiting artists and those who inspire them do not ask for the right or permission to seek alternate realities. Instead, they now envision the world they want to inhabit and take action to create it. The collection of visual materials on view serves as a creative, experimental and educational impetus to analyze the arts and design as part of an ever evolving discourse that spans the past, present, and future.
