Poster for Sarah Bernhardt’s Farewell American Tour, 1905–1906
Regarded as the greatest international diva of her time, the French actress and theatre director Sarah Bernhardt (1844–1923) had a brilliant and tempestuous career spanning more than 60 years. She toured around the world for decades, first performing in New York City in 1880. In 1905 Bernhardt returned to the United States for the first of four “farewell” tours, performing in both major and modest venues across the country. This elegant art nouveau poster is adapted from an 1896 design by the celebrated Czech artist Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) for one of Bernhardt’s greatest productions, La Dame aux Camélias.
