Le Malapou, or The Love Dance, Performed by The Bayaderes, Amany, Tille, Saundirounn, and Ramgounl, at the Theatre Royal Adelphi, Composed by J.J. Masset.
This lithograph depicts the first performance of Indian dance in the West. A group of Hindu devadasis (known as bayaderes, from the Portuguese bailadera) toured Europe in 1838 at the invitation of the French impresario E.C. Tardival. He commissioned artists of India’s Perumal Temple of Thiruvanthipuram to form a troupe of five dancers and three musicians (Ramalinga Mudali, Savaranim, and Deveneyagorum) for 18 months. During this time, they performed in the most popular venues in London and Paris and gave a command performance before King Louis Philippe of France.
