Act I: Child soldiers confront a mouse
Photographer and date unknown
Gelatin silver print, 14 x 11 in.
A favorite with audiences, the mouse battle scene was actually choreographed by Jerome Robbins, and it bears his trademark sense of humor and showmanship. Although this contribution is uncredited in contemporary performances, Robbins’s choreography is acknowledged in the 1954 souvenir program for the production in an essay by Edwin Denby, who points to this scene as a winning example of stylized pantomime.
