Gregory's U.S. lecture tour
Augusta Gregory (1852–1932)
U.S. lecture tour itinerary
1915–16
Gregory made four visits to the U.S. between September 1911 and January 1916, with the last three trips, principally to give paid lectures, organized by the prominent American lecture agent James Pond. Her itineraries were grueling as she traveled by train cross-country, lecturing widely from the east coast to California, with repeated changes of plan due to Pond’s inefficiency. Between just November 28 and December 5, 1915, for instance, she spoke in Great Falls, Montana, left immediately that night for Fargo, North Dakota, and went on to Minneapolis, Minnesota, then Beloit, Wisconsin; Iowa City, Iowa; and finally Burlington, Iowa. Determined to save money to establish an education fund for her grandson, Richard, she routinely slept in the train overnight during these lecture tours.
