Youth Was a "Wife" for Six Years
Gelatin silver print, 1937
In 1937, Mary Baker, aged 26, was arrested for "allegedly accosting" an undercover police officer. Assigned male at birth, she had lived as Mary for ten years, working as a waitress, a laundress, and a "chorus cutie." For the last six years, she had been married to a man.
Forced to appear in court in male attire, Mary is shown here (center) with her attorney (left) and probation officer (right) in the Bay Ridge Magistrate's Court in Brooklyn. She was sentenced to 90 days’ imprisonment.
