Segvndo volvmen de las obras de Soror Jvana Ines de la Cruz (Second volume of the works of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz)
The 17th-century nun Sor (“Sister”) Juana Inés de la Cruz is today widely recognized as the first major poet of Latin America and the first protofeminist thinker of the New World. She is among Mexico’s most significant literary figures, having achieved fame in her early teens as an intellectual connected to the vice-regal court of New Spain. Sor Juana’s Segundo Volumen (Second Volume) is considered her most important collection, and the 1692 first edition shown here is exceedingly rare, with only six copies known to exist. Segundo Volumen contains a variety of Sor Juana’s works in multiple genres, including most of her plays; her most consequential and controversial piece of theological criticism, “Crisis Sobre un Sermon” (“Crisis Over a Sermon”); and the first publication of her poetical masterpiece, “Primero Sueño” (“First Dream”).
