The New York Public Library welcomes people from all backgrounds and celebrates the rich multicultural diversity that defines New York City.

Through a series of programs and services, the Library helps asylum seekers, refugees, migrants, and immigrants navigate and find their way in the city.

Multilingual Resources & World Languages Collections

Available at each of our branch libraries—serve and reflect the local community needs and offer a variety of print materials (books, magazines, newspapers), as well as media (CDs, DVDs) for all ages, and information on online resources and services.

Pasculano Learning Center

The Pasculano Learning Center at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL) is the hub of The New York Public Library’s adult education offerings. Lifelong learners can discover a wide array of programs and resources, including English-language and literacy learning, technology classes through our TechConnect program, and career services.

Classes, Workshops & Programs

NYPL  locations host free work and life skills development programs and cultural and recreational presentations through local partnerships, volunteers, and contracted performers for all ages. This includes:

  • Learn English: Free classes for people who want to learn and improve their English.

  • New Americans Corners: Find circulating materials and informational resources on citizenship and other immigration-related topics.

  • Citizenship Resources and Programs: Library materials and online resources to prepare for the Naturalization Interview and Citizenship Test.

Free City Services

  • ActionNYC: Immigration Legal Help: All New Yorkers can access free and safe immigration legal help through ActionNYC at The New York Public Library. The City-funded program provides free immigration legal screenings and representation in your language, as well as referrals to other providers of legal and non-legal services.
  • Asylum Seeker Resource Navigation Center: Get free and confidential help on topics such as health insurance enrollment, healthcare services and appointments, mental health counseling, school enrollment, child services, and more. Contact your local branch to schedule an appointment.
  • IDNYC: Obtain a free municipal ID that also serves as a library card and a free membership to more than 30 cultural institutions. In addition, it qualifies holders for discounts at health and wellness centers and many other benefits. New Yorkers can sign up for an IDNYC card at several city locations.
