Popo and Fifina: Children of Haiti
This impressionistic novel for young adults tells the story of a brother and sister’s everyday adventures in their new hometown of Cape Haiti. Written by the poets Arna Bontemps and Langston Hughes and illustrated by the prolific E. Simms Campbell, it exemplifies the collaborative, expansive, and varied creative productions of the Harlem Renaissance. While participants in this cultural revival are most often recognized for their contributions to literature, music, and the arts, many of its members also created work for children, bringing their trademark styles and sensibilities to a broader and younger audience.
