Biblioteca del niño mexicano (The Mexican Children’s Library)
A commercial illustrator best known for his skeleton caricatures, or calaveras, José Guadalupe Posada is today recognized as one of the most important artists in Mexican history. He created designs that appeared in penny broadsheets, advertisements, periodicals, and the children’s books on display here, from a series called Biblioteca del niño mexicano (The Mexican Children’s Library).
Posada’s dynamic covers adorned 110 issues of Biblioteca, all of them written by the journalist and novelist Heriberto Frías. The series presented literary adaptations of histories and legends—from pre-Columbian times, through the conquest and colonial period, to the War of Independence from Spain, and beyond. The goals of Biblioteca were to promote love of country for the young nation and foster a strengthened sense of Mexican national identity.
