Bill of sale to a freed Black man, Adam, purchasing his daughter Jenny
A bill of sale for a freeman’s purchase of his enslaved daughter is a small piece of paper of outsized importance. A tangible articulation of the baseness of the institution of slavery, this receipt also conveys the endurance of a father’s love, expressed through a gift to his child of the most treasured possession: freedom.
