Alexandra Danilova and Frederic Franklin in the Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo production, Pas de Deux (also called Grand Adagio)
Photo by Maurice Seymour, c. 1954
Choreography by George Balanchine
Gelatin silver print, 8 x 10 in.
Although Balanchine did not choreograph a full version of The Nutcracker for the Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo (the company version was staged by Alexandra Fedorova based on the Petipa/Ivanov choreography), he did make an iteration of the Grand Adagio from that ballet in 1945 which, as the photograph demonstrates, already features the trademark dives of the Sugar Plum Fairy in her Cavalier’s arms.
