Yvonne Mounsey (née Leibbrandt), seen here dancing the role of Hot Chocolate with Herbert Bliss, was born in South Africa and moved to England when she was 16 to train as a ballet dancer. With de Basil’s Original Ballets Russes, she danced under the name Irina Zarova, before taking her husband’s last name in 1948. She danced as Yvonne Mounsey with New York City Ballet until 1959, originating roles in ballets including Jerome Robbins’ The Cage and The Concert as well as Frederick Ashton’s Picnic at Tintagel and Balanchine’s La Valse.
