Act II: Snowflakes
Gelatin silver print, 8 x 10 in.
This photograph of the snowflakes amply demonstrates the significant changes that the ballet underwent between the original production in 1954 and the modified version in 1964, as Karinska’s costumes look different from the current iteration, Horace Armistead’s familiar Germanic woodland is now replaced by Rouben Ter-Arutunian’s towering Slavic forest, and Balanchine’s choreography has clearly been altered, too.
