Act II: Edward Villella as Candy Cane
Photographer unknown, 1958
Gelatin silver print, 8 x 10 in.
The role of Candy Cane is one of the most physically demanding dances in the ballet, with a specific technique required to make the various jumps through the hoop in time with the music. The athleticism of Edward Villella, who was also an accomplished boxer and baseball player, made him a perfect fit for the part, and his powerful attack and precision in the role continue to make him one of the benchmarks for the interpretation of Candy Cane for current dancers.
