Elevation line drawing of opening show drop for George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker®
Rouben Ter-Arutunian, 1964
Diazo blueline print with red pencil, 29 x 20 in.
As the curtain lifts on George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker® in Act I, this image of an angel hovering over a small hamlet is the first scene that greets the audience. Much of the scenery shows evidence of Ter-Arutunian’s Ukrainian heritage, and the focus on the star is no different as the traditional Christmas meal in Ukraine cannot begin until the first star has been witnessed.
