Act I: Rough sketch for grandfather clock with measurements and notation “Rouben guess what?”
Rouben Ter-Arutunian, c. 1964
Marker on paper, 7 1/2 x 11 in.
The original inspiration for the grandfather clock in Ter-Arutunian's set design for Act I came from a newspaper clipping of a pocket watch. From there he played with various dimensions for construction until he had a clock that could blend into the sedate scenery of the house party, but then magically transform to serve as the catalyst for the witching hour, and become a perch for Drosselmeyer to commence the battle with the Mouse King.
