Robin Meets Maid Marian
In a career spanning more than 40 years, the American artist N.C. Wyeth created over 3,000 paintings and illustrated some 100 books, including such classics as Treasure Island, Rip Van Winkle, The Last of the Mohicans, and Robinson Crusoe. The New York Public Library holds the complete suite of Wyeth’s oil paintings that served as the basis for his Robin Hood illustrations. Wyeth’s model for Maid Marian was his wife, Carolyn, who at the time was pregnant with their sixth and youngest child, Andrew. Following in his father’s footsteps to great success, Andrew Wyeth (1917–2009)—perhaps best known for his 1948 painting Christina’s World—became one of the most famous American artists of his time.
