Souvenir program, The Wiz: The New Musical Version of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”
After a slow start on Broadway, the makers of The Wiz convinced investors to provide additional funding for promotion, particularly through Black media. Within weeks, shows were selling out; the original production ran for over 1,600 performances and inspired the creation of the now-beloved 1978 film version starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson.
The success of The Wiz helped demonstrate the viability of Black productions on the “Great White Way” and provided the world with one of its most enduring Black musicals—one that is for children as much as it is for adults. Since its debut nearly half a century ago, countless productions of The Wiz have been mounted by regional, community, and school theaters across the United States and beyond.
