One of the distinguishing characteristics of Balanchine’s version of The Nutcracker is the number of children incorporated into the ballet. While the original ballet was deemed a féerie and therefore appropriate for children to attend, Balanchine goes beyond the notion of youth audience and makes the children protagonists throughout the work.
